Committees

Membership: Focuses on attracting new members to the Chapter, retaining existing members and re-engaging lapsed members. Membership growth provides the Chapter with a greater voice in the legal community and increases the Chapter’s delegate count and voting power on the state level with WBASNY. Chapter delegates vote on important legislation and policy items at WBASNY board meetings. The greater the number of delegates that represent the Chapter at WBASNY board meetings, the stronger the Chapter’s voting power is at the state level.

CLE: Committee members plan, coordinate and spearhead Chapter CLE programs about legal practice, procedure, and other important topics.

Law School Liaison: Committee members liaise with Law Schools to inform law students about QCWBA membership, programs, events, and initiatives.

Mentoring: Committee members provide mentorship to newly admitted Chapter members as well as law student/recent law school graduate members and facilitates their interaction with the Chapter through “pipelines to the legal profession”, speed-mentoring and other programs.

Legislative: Committee members review proposed state and federal legislation and report its recommendations to the QCWBA Board for action on the legislation and related issues. Committee members are also welcome to attend weekly WBASNY Legislative Committee meetings where a representative from each Chapter votes on which legislative items are to be presented to the WBASNY Executive Board. The WBASNY Executive Board then ultimately votes to support or oppose the proposed legislation.

Private Law: Provides resources to private practitioners on such topics as the practice of law, the importance of networking, and how to build one’s practice. Committee members also offer support to one another.

International Law & Human Rights: Facilitates educational programs and collaborations pertaining to international law, human rights, and respect for the rule of law in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly and in accordance with other human rights conventions.

Domestic Violence: Committee members review the status of shelters or any housing facilities for victims of domestic violence and programs chartered to address the issue of domestic violence throughout Queens County. Committee members also review any legislation that can affect the regulation of facilities assisting victims of domestic violence. The Committee reports its recommendations to the QCWBA Board for action should the Committee find that there are practices or significant issues that warrant addressing or proposing any new legislation or changes needed in current law. The Committee also works closely with the Chapter’s Legislative Committee on proposed legislation relevant to domestic violence. Committee members are also welcome to attend WBASNY Domestic Violence Committee meetings where a representative from each Chapter votes on what legislative items should be presented to the WBASNY Executive Board.

Diversity: Seeks to achieve diversity within the legal profession. Committee members provide resources and information to the QCWBA officers and board members to facilitate community-based diversity programming and networking opportunities. The Committee works collaboratively with other legal, educational, and community organizations to accomplish the stated goal of diversity in the legal profession.

Guardianship: Focuses on legislation, programs and other issues related to guardianship. Guardianship is granted to appoint a person with decision-making authority for another person who is unable to act independently or lacks the capacity to do so. Guardianships are commonly established for the care of minor children or incapacitated adults.

Veterans Affairs: Facilitates a wide range of programing pertaining to, honoring, and supporting veterans, with events such as clothing drives, CLEs on Military Law, film screenings and panel discussions regarding women in the military and the plight of women veterans. The Committee works closely with the Queens County Felony Veterans’ Treatment Court.

Mental Wellness: Focuses on the goal of providing information to increase overall wellness through self-care and works towards fighting the negative stigma that is often associated with mental health issues. Committee members facilitate programming and furnish resources for education and increased awareness of issues related to mental, physical, and overall well-being for women and lawyers.

Magazine: The Queens Magazine is a semi-annual magazine published by the Chapter. The magazine highlights QCWBA events, the recognition of members, and contains interviews of members of the judiciary, as well as many articles of interest to members, nonmembers, and the legal community.
